Internet Access Policy

The Grangeville Centennial Library, in its role as a supporter of education and public information access to patrons, takes advantage of the opportunities afforded by the advances in technology to meet those demands by providing access to the Internet. Because the Internet is a unique resource and has special opportunities and risks associated with its use, the Library Board of Trustees has adopted the following policy regarding public use of the Internet.

The Library does not use filtering software. We do not monitor use and because Sites on the Internet change often, rapidly, and unpredictably, the Library cannot protect Users from information and images which they might find offensive, disturbing, or inaccurate. Because we have no control over the information accessed through the Internet, we cannot be held responsible for its content. As with other library materials, supervision or restriction of a child's access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent or guardian, not the staff.

The Board hereby authorizes library employees to enforce this policy and to establish additional necessary daily operating rules for use of the work station that are consistent with this policy. All daily operating rules shall be posted on the work station so they are visible to work station users.

Use of the Internet work station is a privilege and not a right. Violation of any provision of this policy or any daily operating rules established pursuant to this policy may result in use restrictions or termination of the privilege to use the work station.

Validity:  Not all sources on the Internet are accurate, complete, or current. Users are encouraged to use good judgment in evaluating the validity of the information they access over the Internet.

Privacy:  The Library makes every effort to protect patrons' rights to privacy and confidentiality, however, given the public location of our terminals, this may not always be possible.Users are cautioned that because security on the Internet cannot be guaranteed, all transactions, files, and communications are vulnerable to unauthorized access and use and therefore, should be considered public.

Copyright:  Materials obtained or copied on this computer network may be subject to copyright laws. A work protected by copyright may not be copied without permission of the copyright owner unless the proposed use falls within the definition of "Fair Use."Violation of the copyright may subject you to an action for damages and/or an injunction.

Students doing research should be sure to note addresses and network sites for citation in bibliographies. The Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from its Internet connection use by patrons and/or staff.

Internet Procedures:

1.       Users may not engage in any activity that interferes with operation of the library or use of the library or its resources by other patrons.

2.       Users may not engage in or use the Internet or library equipment for any illegal purpose or activity. Criminal and/or civil prosecution may result in illegal use of the Internet or library equipment.

Library Cards

Free of charge to individuals living inside the city limits of Grangeville. Adults over 18 must present proof of residence with a current street (not mailing) address. Children under 18 must bring a parent or legal guardian with proof of residence.

Out of Town (non-resident) cards are issued to the household and covers all persons living in the same residence. Cost is $30 per year.

By city ordinance, you are considered resident if you own property inside the city limits and can provide proof of ownership.

Interlibrary Loan

We don't have it? We can order materials from another library if available but we cannot guarantee a delivery date and the material will only be available for a limited loan period. It may not be renewed.

We will try to borrow from a library which does not charge loan fees, but that is not always possible. Any loan charges will be paid by the requesting patron.

Lost or damaged materials are also the responsibility of the patron.

VALNet Library System

We are a member of the VALNet library system. Our patrons are issued VALNet library cards which are good at all member libraries. The catalog is searchable online and books may be ordered online and sent to Grangeville for pickup. We'll give you a call when they arrive. You may also use your card to check out books if you are at a member library and they may be returned to Grangeville. They will be sent back to the owning library by courier. You can also check the status of your library account and see what books you have out, when they are due, and pending hold requests.
